The licensing detail that changes the buying decision
ElevenLabs says free-plan output cannot be used commercially. When shared non-commercially, it requires attribution. Paid-plan output has commercial rights only within the applicable terms, with the necessary rights to the underlying content; Beta Services are excluded. What our small hands-on test actually measured
On 12 September, we generated an original 239-character onboarding script using Roger and Eleven Multilingual v2 in a Free workspace. Speed was 1, stability 0.5, similarity 0.75 and style 0, with speaker boost enabled. The credit balance moved from 10,000 to 9,761. The player displayed 17 seconds, and an MP3 download succeeded at the selected 44.1 kHz/128 kbps setting.
That verifies the basic generation-to-download workflow and this request's credit cost. It is one short sample, not a voice-quality ranking, pronunciation assessment or guarantee of how many finished minutes your scripts will produce. We have kept the free-tier audio internal.
For planning only, 10,000 credits would cover 41 requests of that exact 239-character length; 30,000 would cover 125. Those are request counts, not finished videos. Revisions, longer scripts and other credit-consuming tools reduce the number of usable deliverables.
A practical first-project workflow
- Write a representative excerpt. Include your product name, a date, a price and an abbreviation. A generic greeting will not expose the problems in your real script.
- Test privately on Free. Check whether the editor and export fit your workflow. Listen for incorrect names and awkward pauses before preparing a long project.
- Decide the intended use before the final render. For commercial work, select a qualifying paid plan and check the service's current terms.
- Budget for revision. Save the script and settings for each version. Treat retries as part of production, rather than assuming every generated minute is usable.
- Save a delivery record. Keep the final audio, generation date, model, voice and subscription receipt alongside your project files.
Who should choose which plan?
Choose Free if you are still deciding whether this workflow suits you and do not need a commercial deliverable. Choose Starter if commercial use is the immediate requirement and its credit allowance covers your pilot. Consider Creator only when your measured workload or required features justify it.
